Flying with a dog on United Airlines

Yes, if the dog is small enough. United accepts domesticated dogs that fit in a carrier under the seat in front of you, for a service charge each way. Trained service animals travel under United's separate accessibility rules and are not booked or charged as in-cabin pets.

What United Airlines actually requires

  • In-cabin pets are domesticated cats and dogs that fit in a travel carrier underneath the seat in front of you.
  • There is a $125 service charge each way, plus a further $125 for each stopover longer than four hours inside the U.S. or longer than 24 hours outside it.
  • Hard-sided kennels may be no more than 17.5 x 12 x 7.5 inches; soft-sided kennels are recommended at no more than 18 x 11 x 11 inches and may exceed that slightly because they collapse.
  • Only one pet is allowed per kennel, and the animal must be able to stand up and turn around inside it.
  • Puppies must be at least two months old on domestic flights and at least four months old on international flights, because of rabies vaccination requirements.
  • Pets cannot travel in the cabin to, from or through Hawaii and a list of international destinations.
  • Pets cannot travel with unaccompanied minors, and must be on the same flights as the traveller responsible for them.
  • The kennel does not count against your carry-on allowance, but it must stay closed and under the seat in front of you for the whole flight.
  • The policy covers flights operated by United and United Express only; on a codeshare you must check the operating carrier's own rules.
