Taking a dog into Glacier National Park

In developed areas only. Glacier allows pets in campgrounds, picnic areas, parking areas and along roads, and on no trail in the park. The park's pets page does not address service animals. Service dog access is set by federal law rather than by a park's pet rules, so ask Glacier directly rather than reading this page as a refusal.

What Glacier National Park actually requires

  • Pets are allowed in developed areas: in your car while driving park roads, in frontcountry campgrounds, in picnic areas, along roads where you have stopped, in parking areas, and in boats on lakes where motorised watercraft are permitted.
  • Pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet, under physical restraint, or caged at all times — including while riding in an open-bed pickup truck.
  • Pets are not permitted on trails, along lake shores outside developed locations, in the backcountry, or in any building.
