Taking a dog into Acadia National Park
Unusually widely, yes. Acadia permits leashed pets on 100 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage roads, with a short list of named exceptions. Service animals may accompany their owners to all park locations and programs. Emotional support and therapy animals are not service animals under this definition.
What Acadia National Park actually requires
- Pets are permitted on 100 miles (161 km) of hiking trails and 45 miles (72 km) of carriage roads in the park.
- Federal law requires all pets be kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times.
- Six trails are closed to pets: Precipice, Beehive, Ladder Trail to Dorr Mountain, Beech Cliffs, Perpendicular, and part of Jordan Cliffs.
- Dogs are barred from Sand Beach between 15 June and 8 September, and from Echo Lake between 15 May and 15 September.
- Dogs are not allowed in public buildings, at ranger-led programs, in the Wild Gardens of Acadia, or at Duck Harbor Campground.
- The Blackwoods, Seawall and Schoodic Woods campgrounds permit pets.
