Taking a dog into PetSmart

Yes. PetSmart permits domestic dogs in its stores provided they are appropriately secured — leashed or safely confined — and vaccinated as appropriate. A non-traditional pet that would otherwise be barred is allowed if it qualifies as a service animal under the ADA.

What PetSmart actually requires

  • Pets must be appropriately secured, meaning leashed or safely confined, and vaccinated as appropriate for that type of pet.
  • Permitted animals include domestic dogs and cats, birds, small animals and reptiles sold at PetSmart, other non-venomous reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, sugar gliders and pot-bellied pigs.
  • Non-traditional pets are not permitted unless they qualify as service animals under the ADA, or are receiving care at an in-store veterinary hospital.
  • An animal visiting an in-store veterinary hospital must stay in a crate, kennel or other fastened enclosure until it is inside the examination room.

Where this comes from

“The following pets are permitted in PetSmart stores provided the pets are appropriately secured (leashed or safely confined) and vaccinated (as appropriate for the particular type of pet).”

Source: PetSmart — About PetSmart, in-store pet policy. Published by the company itself, read and recorded on September 7, 2026 (dataset 2026.09). We publish the operator’s own wording rather than a summary of what other sites report, and we do not turn “varies by location” into a yes.

Before you rely on this

Pet rules, fees and limits change without notice, and staff at an individual store can apply them differently from what head office publishes. Treat this page as the question to ask, not the final answer: contact the specific store and confirm before you set out with your dog.

Other retail chain policies we have read

Each of these was read at its own source. None of them is inferred from PetSmart.
