What it costs to put a dog down, and who says so

The 2025 CareCredit / Synchrony ASQ360 benchmark puts US dog euthanasia at $139 in a clinic and $410 at home. Those are modelled benchmarks. Underneath them, this page also lists what 18 named providers publish on their own price pages — a different kind of number, kept in a different table.

Two kinds of number, never mixed

A benchmark cost estimate is not the same as an observed provider price. One is modelled from a national survey; the other is what a specific business posted on a specific page on a specific date. This site never averages the two together, because the result would be a figure nobody published and nobody could check.

The distinction changes how you should use each table. The state benchmarks below are good for one thing: knowing roughly what part of the national range your state sits in before you make any calls. They are not what your clinic charges, and the dataset labels every row “Benchmark estimate (NOT observed clinic average)” for exactly that reason. The provider table is the opposite: those figures are real and checkable, and each links to the page it was read from, but they cover 8 states rather than the country. Both tables are honest about which of those two things they are, and neither pretends to be the other.

Benchmark cost by state

In-clinic benchmarks run from $111 in Mississippi to $249 in Hawaii; in-home benchmarks from $329 in Mississippi to $734 in Hawaii. All 51 jurisdictions are listed.

What named providers actually post

These 27 prices were read from providers’ own websites and each links back to the page it came from. They are not a sample of the market and they are not averaged into anything: coverage is AZ, CA, CO, FL, NY, PA, TX, WA, and a provider is here because it publishes its prices, which most do not.

Read the service column carefully rather than the price column. “Euthanasia only, family retains body” and “euthanasia plus private cremation” are different products several hundred dollars apart, and a provider’s own wording is kept here exactly as they wrote it for that reason.

The charges that are easy to miss

Travel, timing and weight. Providers in this dataset post 15 separate surcharge lines — travel and housecall fees, evening, weekend, holiday and after-hours loadings, and weight bands — on top of the headline appointment price.

A separate quality-of-life or hospice consultation is also priced separately by some practices. It is a different appointment: an examination and a conversation about the options, with no procedure attached.

If that is the appointment you are trying to prepare for, score the quality-of-life scale first and bring the result. It costs nothing and makes the consultation start further along.

Aftercare is a second decision, and a second bill

Cremation is priced separately by most providers and bundled by some. Private, individually partitioned, communal and aquamation mean different things, cost different amounts, and are defined differently by different businesses. The cremation cost page sets out the terms and the posted prices for each. It is worth reading before the appointment rather than during it.

Rules this page follows

Each fact below arrives with a restriction written by the people who compiled it, and those restrictions are printed here rather than paraphrased. They are the reason this page stops where it does.

  • Never label modeled benchmark as clinic average.
  • Never recommend euthanasia based on age alone.

Method and sources

Senior-dog dataset version 2026.09, compiled 2026-09-07. The state benchmarks come from one source and are labelled as modelled. The provider prices each carry their own link in the tables above and are not restated here. The full methodology explains how the two layers are kept apart.

Common questions

How much does it cost to put a dog down?
The CareCredit / Synchrony ASQ360 2025 benchmark puts the US figure at $139 for in-clinic euthanasia and $410 for in-home euthanasia. Those are survey and model benchmarks, not an average of clinic-posted prices. Actual posted prices from named providers in this dataset run from $60 at a nonprofit for the smallest weight band to $675 for a home visit in New York City.
Why is in-home euthanasia so much more expensive?
Because you are buying a veterinarian's travel time as well as the appointment. The benchmark gap is $139 in clinic against $410 at home, and the provider prices in this dataset show the mechanism directly: several charge a separate travel fee, an after-hours or weekend surcharge, and a weight surcharge, each itemised on their own price pages.
Does the price include cremation?
Often not, and this is where quoted prices diverge most. Some providers post a euthanasia-only price with the family retaining the body, others a bundle that includes communal or private cremation, and the difference between those two can be several hundred dollars. Ask which one you are being quoted before comparing two numbers.
Is there low-cost or nonprofit euthanasia?
Yes, in some areas. This dataset includes a nonprofit posting $60 for euthanasia in its smallest weight band and a humane society posting keepsake add-ons separately. Availability is entirely local: humane societies, shelter clinics and some university teaching hospitals run reduced-cost end-of-life services, and none of them are national.
Why do your state figures say benchmark rather than average?
Because they are modelled from a national survey, not compiled from clinics in that state. Presenting them as the average clinic price where you live would be a claim nobody made and nobody checked. The dataset labels every one of those rows as a benchmark estimate and this site keeps that label attached wherever the number appears.
